The WBF 2002's weigh platform contains electrodes which measure the electrical resistance of the body. By knowing age, gender, and stature, both the body fat and water percentage values are calculated by the built-in computer. This method is quick, safe and accurate, giving a reading within 30 seconds. The scale has a memory for up to 12 people, allowing it to be used by many people without entering the data every time. Weight alone is not enough. Ordinary scales give you only part of the story; especially when you are dieting, you need to know your body fat and body water percentages. It is possible to lose weight by losing muscle and water instead of unhealthy body fat. Abundant water is critical to every bodily function (blood is 83% water, muscle 73%). The most reliable method for measuring body fat is to weigh the body while totally immersed in water. The disadvantages of this method are obvious; it is messy, requires a swimming pool and takes a long time. The Dual Energy X-ray method is also excellent but requires special equipment and also takes a long time. Scales with built-in calipers measure a roll of flesh, are cheaper and fast but have poor accuracy. The infrared and ultrasonic methods are not widely available and are also poor to fair in accuracy. On the other hand, the body resistance method is low in cost and, while not quite as accurate as the total immersion method, gives results that are excellent considering the convenience of using it in your own home.
